Because of that, the usage of this security software is effectively\r\nlimited to older Intel machines only. Some attempts were already made to\r\nsupport AMD and TPM 2.0 by 3mdeb[3], however the work suffered from lack of\r\nbusiness justification and stopped at porting AEM scripts to use TPM 2.0. However, being up to date\r\ndoes not prevent the firmware vulnerabilities from appearing. The Static Root\r\nof Trust (SRT) like Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Secure Boot\r\nand measured boot provided by the firmware is not always sufficient to\r\nestablish a secure environment for an operating system. If the firmware is\r\ncompromised, it could inject malicious software into operating system\r\ncomponents and prevent the machine owner from detecting it. Silicon vendors\r\nimplement alternative technologies to establish a Dynamic Root of Trust (DRT)\r\nto provide a secure environment for operating system launch and integrity\r\nmeasurements. Either from SRT or DRT, these integrity measurements can be used\r\nfor operating system attestation. However, DRT technologies are designed to\r\nprovide the ability to establish a secure environment for integrity\r\nmeasurements at any arbitrary point of time instead of relying on the firmware,\r\nwhich requires machine reset to establish the aforementioned secure\r\nenvironment.\r\n\r\nThe usage of Dynamic Root of Trust technologies like Intel Trusted Execution\r\nTechnology (TXT) or AMD Secure Startup becomes more and more significant, for\r\nexample, Dynamic Root of Trust for Measurement (D-RTM) requirements of\r\nMicrosoft Secured Core PCs[6]. D-RTM hasn't found its place in open-source\r\nprojects yet, but that gradually changes. The demand on having firmware\r\nindependent Roots of Trust is increasing, and projects that satisfy this demand\r\nare growing, for instance, TrenchBoot. TrenchBoot is a framework that allows\r\nindividuals and projects to build security engines to perform launch integrity\r\nactions for their systems. The framework builds upon Boot Integrity\r\nTechnologies (BITs) that establish one or more Roots of Trust (RoT) from which\r\na degree of confidence that integrity actions were not subverted. The project\r\nhas grown a lot thanks to the previous NLnet NGI0 PET[7] grant and now it looks\r\nfor further expansion into extensive use of the DRT technologies in open-source\r\nand security-oriented operating systems like Qubes OS. Qubes OS Anti Evil Maid\r\n(AEM) software heavily depends on the availability of the D-RTM technologies to\r\nprevent the Evil Maid attacks. However, the project hasn't evolved much since\r\nthe beginning of 2018 and froze on the support of TPM 1.2 with Intel TXT in\r\nlegacy boot mode (BIOS). Because of that, the usage of this security software\r\nis effectively limited to older Intel machines only. TPM 1.2 implemented SHA1\r\nhashing algorithm, which is nowadays considered weak in the era of\r\nforever-increasing computer performance and quantum computing. The solution to\r\nthis problem comes with a newer TPM 2.0 with more agile cryptographic\r\nalgorithms and SHA256 implementation by default.\r\n\r\nThe initial AEM implementation relied on the Trusted Boot[8], Intel's reference\r\nimplementation of Intel TXT. It never had any plans to support AMD processors.\r\nTrenchBoot is filling this gap, supporting both Intel and AMD hardware which\r\nmakes it an ideal target to replace Trusted Boot in Qubes OS AEM\r\nimplementation. Furthermore, the project grant would be used to implement the\r\nmissing pieces in the Qubes OS AEM software to cover the AMD and Intel support\r\nfor both TPM 1.2 and TPM 2.0.\r\n\r\n[6] https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/device-experiences/oem-highly-secure#what-makes-a-secured-core-pc\r\n[7] https://nlnet.nl/project/OpenDRTM/\r\n[8] https://sourceforge.net/p/tboot/wiki/Home/", "recording_license": "", "do_not_record": false, "persons": [{"code": "WUJUZ8", "name": "Micha\u0142 \u017bygowski", "avatar": "https://cfp.3mdeb.com/media/avatars/miczyg_a1UFnVZ.png", "biography": "Micha\u0142 \u017bygowski is a versatile engineer with a strong focus on system firmware.
